Viliam Slaminka

Viliam Slaminka (1985) is a visual artist who studied Painting and Other Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Alongside his artistic practice, he works as an illustrator, comic artist, and educator.

His work humorously reflects on social and gender stereotypes. He approaches serious subjects with a sense of childlike playfulness, using a simple and accessible visual language. His practice incorporates numerous references to popular culture, while his sculptural works employ the ready-made principle, experimenting with materials and recycling almost anything that comes to hand. Audience participation is an important aspect of his work, often inviting viewers into interactive projects through play.

Viliam will share his residency with his partner, artist Dana Tomečková.

During our residency, we hope to explore a new rhythm between parenthood and artistic practice, investigating how these two worlds can nourish one another.

Wake up, play, write, draw, sleep.
Wake up, nature, nature, sketch, sleep.
Wake up, sculpt, sleep, sleep, sleep…

During the residency, I will be developing notes and sketches for an upcoming exhibition on fatherhood, while also working on a new comic for the children’s magazine Slniečko.
